The eighth “Afternoon Tea” of Jeme Tienyow Honors College was held on the afternoon of April 1 at Siyuan Time Cafe, Beijing Jiaotong University. Professor Zhang Xinghua shared the theme of "Statistical Physics, Soft Matter and Urban Big Data" by combining with complex systems in life, and introduced soft matter science and opportunities for the development of physics in cross-disciplines in a relaxed and humorous language. Through specific cases, he introduced the application of soft matter and big data in the research and processing of urban resource allocation by combining with his own experience, introduced the cross-application of physics and aerospace science and technology, power system, urban transportation and other disciplines, and guided the students to appreciate the beauty of the world by learning physics. Finally, when it comes to scientific research, he believed that everyone must have the determination to overcome difficulties and encouraged students to discover problems from around and actively explore the unknown world.
During the communication session, the students exchanged ideas with teachers on "Is Iron Man's armor possible in reality through soft matter, the specific research direction and application of physics in the Faculty of Science" and other issues, which improved their professional knowledge and professional interest and helped to solve some problems in the personal development plan, and played a positive role in firming the future professional choice and clarifying the personal direction.
